Julian Tjon Sack Kie (*1996)

For Julian, composing is a way to communicate perspectives on topics such as nature, non-Western philosophies, and spiritual practices. It’s also a way to communicate internal matters such as his Surinamese roots, navigating through a Western society, and to communicate the dialogues with his inner self. Julian believes that in the processes lie the most important messages, which directly translate to his power of expression. With this foundation, he aims to give a sense of dualism and awareness of oneself and one's environment through his work.

To deepen his knowledge in music, he began his studies at the HKU Music and Technology department. Afterward, he began his studies in classical composition at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he studied with Wim Henderickx, Willem Jeths, Meriç Artaç, and Richard Ayres. At the same time, he studied Kora with Lamin Kuyateh and travelled to West Africa to study with Sekou Saho and Sadio Cissokho.

Over the years, Julian’s music has been performed at venues such as Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Dutch National Opera, and Concertgebouw, amongst others. He had the privilege to work together with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra in Paradiso, with Rakhi Singh at Wonderfeel festival, and with Stranded FM for Gaudeamus festival. Julian has also created several film scores for Emergence Magazine.

As a musician, Julian focuses mostly on improvised music as a double bassist in Sons of Jumira and as a Kora and synthesizer player in his duo TIDE with Laurence Gaudreau.
